Born penniless and naked in a shack in the deepest woods of Northwest Iowa, Rick Swanson led a life of joyous indolent ease, spending his days skipping merrily through fields of wildflowers and frolicking in the sun. Then one day that all came crashing to a halt - the day he thought to himself, "Hmmm... I think I'll buy some drums and join a band."
As a founding member of the Smoking Clams, one of Sioux City's premiere party bands, Swanson honed his skills for years as the group grew to play some of the area's biggest venues. When the Clams' guitarist moved to Minneapolis, Russ Howard took the lead. About the same time, Chris Radloff joined the band as bassist. Shortly after that, the Clams folded.
Swanson was the owner of The Chesterfield, Northwest Iowa's premiere outlet for live music, founding the club, building the stage, and running the day-to-day operations for five years. He now runs his own contracting business, lives in a mansion in South Sioux City with his wife and dog, and collects self-produced swamp gas as a hobby.
